Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Enugu State, has called for an urgent investigation into an incident in which police officers allegedly fired tear gas at elderly residents during a prayer meeting in Umuokara Village, Orba, Udenu Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred on November 2, 2026, during a town hall meeting and prayer gathering organised in honour of the NDC deputy governorship candidate, Dr Frank Omeje Okenwa.
Ohaa described the incident as disturbing, saying the elderly men and women were peacefully gathered to pray and show support for their son when police officers allegedly disrupted the meeting with tear gas.
Reports indicated that the organisers had requested police security and allegedly paid ₦160,000 through a POS terminal to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Obollo-Afor, Abraham Abrajas.
Despite the alleged payment, police operatives reportedly stormed the venue and fired tear gas into the hall, leaving several elderly residents hospitalised.
The NDC candidate expressed sympathy for the victims and questioned why people exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly were allegedly treated like criminals.
He also warned against using security agencies to intimidate citizens because of political differences, insisting that the police must remain neutral and protect everyone.

Ohaa further alleged that the incident was part of a growing pattern of attacks and intimidation against NDC members and supporters in Enugu State.
He recalled previous attacks in Obuoffia, at the airport and at a campaign office, where a 43-year-old man was reportedly shot dead. He claimed that the incidents remained unresolved, with no arrests made.
The politician called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Enugu State Commissioner of Police to investigate the incident and ensure that any officer found responsible for wrongdoing is held accountable.
