The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians and their supporters against tearing, defacing or destroying campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, said it had observed increasing cases of deliberate destruction of campaign materials across the country.
The police described the act as political intolerance and warned that anyone found responsible would be arrested and prosecuted.
According to the statement, the destruction or unlawful removal of another candidate’s campaign materials could amount to malicious damage, an offence punishable under applicable laws, including Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law.
The police stressed that political differences or loyalty to a particular party do not give anyone the right to destroy another candidate’s property or prevent them from exercising their right to campaign freely.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reportedly directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent such incidents, investigate reported cases and ensure that offenders are brought to justice.
The Force also warned political sponsors and individuals who recruit or encourage others to destroy campaign materials that they would face prosecution if found culpable.
It urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peaceful campaigns, respect opposing political views and avoid actions capable of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process.
The police maintained that political thuggery, intimidation and other forms of lawlessness would not be tolerated as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
