Nene Aderibigbe, mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has criticised the growing influence of social media on Generation Z, expressing concern that many young people no longer think independently.
Aderibigbe said excessive dependence on social media has made some young people rely heavily on other people’s opinions rather than developing their own ideas and perspectives.
She also expressed concern that many gifted young people struggle to recognise and appreciate their abilities because of the influence of social media.
“Social media has just turned a lot of things upside down. They don’t have their own thinking again; it is only people’s thinking they use now,” she said.
Offering advice, Aderibigbe encouraged young people to deliberately spend two to three hours away from their phones, reflect on their lives and practise meditation to develop greater self-awareness.
