The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, has intercepted 10,126 parcels of cannabis sativa worth N743.4 million at different locations across Ogun State.
The Area Comptroller, Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this on Tuesday while handing over the seized drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Idiroko Special Area Command. The drugs were received by Commander Williams Ekundayo.
Afeni described the operation as a preventive measure rather than a seizure, noting that cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana, has a devastating effect on consumers. He said that without the intervention, the state would have faced a wave of drug-related crises that could overwhelm the healthcare and rehabilitation system.

“Its availability would have spiked drug-related health issues and overwhelmed our strained psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities,” he said.
Receiving the drugs, Ekundayo called the seizure another milestone in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking. He commended the Customs officials involved and urged greater synergy between the NDLEA and the Customs Service.
Ekundayo also warned those involved in drug trafficking to desist, stating that persistent offenders would be arrested by law enforcement agencies.
