A fire outbreak razed a cluster of makeshift residential structures in the Abule Oja area of Yaba, Lagos State, but no casualties were recorded following a swift response by emergency agencies.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said emergency responders were mobilised immediately after receiving a distress call about the incident at Abudu Street, near UNILAG Road.
Responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, UNILAG Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force and LASEMA worked together to contain the blaze.
Authorities said the fire spread rapidly because the affected structures were closely built and constructed with highly combustible materials. However, emergency teams successfully prevented the flames from extending to nearby buildings, including an adjoining two-storey structure, which was saved.
Following the operation, responders carried out damping-down activities to eliminate remaining hotspots and prevent a fresh outbreak, while the affected area was secured to protect residents.

LASEMA said a detailed assessment of the damage is ongoing, adding that relevant government agencies have been mobilised to provide relief materials and humanitarian assistance to those affected.
The agency noted that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, with investigations already underway by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with other relevant authorities.
Residents were urged to observe fire safety measures by avoiding faulty electrical wiring, preventing the overloading of sockets and ensuring homes and business premises are equipped with basic firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. Emergency officials also commended responders and residents for their cooperation during the operation.
