More than 15 months after the death of Mrs. Nkechi Florence Elijah, her burial remains stalled due to an ongoing dispute between her husband and members of their community over the need for an autopsy.
Mrs. Elijah passed away on April 9, 2025, in Umuzomgbo, Ihechiowa, located in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.
Since her death, unresolved disagreements and suspicions surrounding the circumstances have prevented her remains from being laid to rest.
Her husband, Elijah Ndubuisi Amah, has alleged that certain members of the community have continuously obstructed burial plans, insisting that an autopsy must first be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
According to him, the demand is fueled by suspicions that he may have been involved in his wife’s death.
Amah further claimed that the community’s traditional ruler supported the call for an autopsy. However, he noted that his late wife’s family opposed the procedure on cultural and religious grounds, arguing that it would involve mutilation of the body and violate their burial traditions.
Despite reportedly securing a court judgment authorizing the burial, Amah said he has faced persistent resistance, including arrest and detention in both Umuahia and Abuja during the course of the dispute.
He has appealed to the Abia State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure his wife receives a dignified burial.

In response, the traditional ruler denied the allegations, stating that neither he nor the community prevented the burial or accused Amah of wrongdoing.
He explained that the matter was referred to the police for proper investigation and that Amah was detained only in connection with ongoing inquiries and the pending autopsy.
The monarch also dismissed claims that financial challenges delayed the procedure, insisting that funds had already been made available. He alleged that Amah failed to honor police invitations for the autopsy process.
According to community authorities, the investigation is still ongoing, and Mrs. Elijah’s remains have not been released because the cause of death has yet to be officially established.
The case continues to draw attention, highlighting the tension between cultural beliefs, legal processes, and the pursuit of justice in unresolved death cases.
