The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has unveiled a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at tackling kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent criminal activities across Abuja and surrounding communities.
The unit was officially launched on Monday by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, who stated that its establishment was directed by the Inspector-General of Police as part of broader efforts to strengthen security operations nationwide.
According to Sanusi, the VCRU is designed to enhance rapid response, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure more effective policing across the territory.
He explained that the unit has been strategically divided into five operational sectors to guarantee wider coverage and faster intervention in crime-prone areas.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to proactively addressing emerging security threats and ensuring the safety of residents. No area within the FCT will be left vulnerable,” he said.
The police boss noted that officers deployed to the unit were carefully selected based on competence, discipline, and operational capacity, adding that they have undergone rigorous training to handle high-risk situations.
He charged the personnel to uphold professionalism, respect human rights, and operate strictly within the law, warning that misconduct, abuse of power, or extortion would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Sanusi also called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information, stressing that effective security requires collaboration between the police and the public.
Speaking at the event, the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, commended the initiative, describing the unit as a “force multiplier” that would significantly boost security operations in the FCT.
He urged members of the unit to justify the confidence placed in them and assured the police of continued military support, noting that soldiers are already deployed across the FCT to assist in maintaining law and order.
During the ceremony, a special commendation award was presented to CSP Mustafa Mohammed, Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, for his bravery during a high-risk operation in Bwari on June 5, 2026.
Traditional leaders also pledged their support for the initiative. Speaking on behalf of the FCT Council of Chiefs, the Ona of Abaji, Adamu Yunusa, described the creation of the VCRU as a timely response to rising security concerns.
“The establishment of this unit sends a strong message that violent crime will no longer thrive in our communities,” he said.
The launch of the VCRU forms part of ongoing reforms by the Nigeria Police Force aimed at improving operational effectiveness and strengthening the fight against organised crime across the country.
