Chelsea captain Millie Bright has announced her immediate retirement from professional football at 32, closing a 12 year career in West London that helped define the most successful era in the women’s game.
Bright leaves as Chelsea’s all time record appearance maker with 314 games and 20 major trophies, including eight Women’s Super League titles. She was central to the club’s run of six straight domestic titles from 2020 to 2025.
The defender joined Chelsea from Doncaster Belles in 2015 and became the pillar of the Blues backline. She also retired from England duty in 2025 with 88 caps and a Euro 2022 winners medal. Bright surpassed Jordan Nobbs’ WSL appearance record during her final seasons.

A lingering injury kept her out in the closing weeks of the current campaign. In her announcement, Bright said she leaves on her own terms and out of loyalty to the only club she ever wanted to represent.
Bright will transition into a new role as a club ambassador and trustee of the Chelsea Foundation. “My playing days are over, but I will remain Chelsea in a different way,” she said.
Tributes from fans and teammates have poured in for the player widely seen as the heartbeat of Chelsea Women. Her retirement marks the end of a defining era at the club.
