The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer attached to the Headquarters 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.
The officer, identified as Cap. Etim Essien, was named in reports concerning the alleged abuse of a 13-year-old.
The Army disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lt. Col. Olumide Olukoya, following reports of the incident circulating online.
Olukoya said the Army treats allegations of sexual abuse involving minors and other vulnerable persons with utmost seriousness.
He explained that appropriate steps had been taken to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegation.
However, the spokesperson said it would be inappropriate to determine the officer’s culpability or otherwise while the investigation was still ongoing.
He assured that the Army would uphold due process, fairness and the protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
Olukoya also disclosed that relevant civil authorities were looking into the matter, adding that the Army would cooperate fully to ensure a thorough investigation in accordance with the law.
He said the military maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards conduct that violates the law or established service regulations.
