
The Edo State Police Command has arrested a man found in possession of 36 live cartridges during a routine stop-and-search operation in Benin City.
The suspect, identified as Richard Gabriel, 36, was intercepted by officers attached to the Ikpoba Hill Area Command at Guobadia Junction along the Benin–Auchi Road.
According to the police, the operation involved stopping a mini bus conveying seven passengers from the Benin–Auchi Bypass to Ring Road in Benin City.
During the check, three male passengers reportedly abandoned their belongings and attempted to flee the scene.
Officers immediately gave chase and arrested Gabriel, who hails from Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State.

A search conducted on his luggage led to the discovery of 36 rounds of live cartridges allegedly concealed in a bag.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the arrest, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to curb the movement of illegal arms and improve security across Benin City.
She added that the command remains committed to maintaining vigilance through routine patrols and stop-and-search operations.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commended the officers involved for their professionalism and urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies in the fight against crime.
