
The Kogi State Police Command has recovered the body of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) official after suspected bandits attacked a funeral convoy and abducted several passengers along the Ochadamu–Ejule Expressway.
The incident occurred on July 9, 2026, as the remains of Augustine Ikwue were being transported from Lokoja, Kogi State, to his hometown in Otukpo, Benue State, for burial. The convoy, travelling in a Hummer bus, was ambushed by armed men who forced the occupants into the bush.
Police spokesperson, ASP Salisu Oyiza, confirmed the attack, stating that a joint security team comprising police officers, military personnel, members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and Community Policing operatives immediately launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call.

According to her, security operatives recovered the abandoned vehicle and the casket containing Ikwue’s remains. The corpse has since been deposited at the Elemona Mortuary in Ejule.
Oyiza said security personnel have intensified search operations in the Ugbakpedo and Ofejiji forests, where the kidnappers are suspected to have fled. She added that surveillance and patrols have also been strengthened along major roads in the area.
The police assured the public that efforts were ongoing to rescue the abducted victims and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing security operations.
