A tragic case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced in Lagos, where a 44-year-old woman, Blessing Okolie, reportedly lost her life following complications from a fibroid surgery.
Her sister, Beady Nnanna, a media personality, claimed that the surgery carried out at a private hospital in the Abule Egba area went wrong after a doctor allegedly left a surgical instrument inside Blessing’s body.
According to her, the incident triggered severe complications that worsened over several days.
Blessing, who had battled a large fibroid for years, had hoped the operation would improve her health and chances of starting a family.
Despite initial concerns about the hospital’s standard, the procedure went ahead on March 28, 2026.
However, Nnanna alleged that signs of trouble began almost immediately after the operation, citing poor post-operative care and unusual medical practices.

Days later, Blessing developed severe abdominal pain and swelling, but requests for further medical tests were reportedly ignored.
It was only after persistent pressure that a scan was eventually conducted at another facility, revealing a metallic object inside her abdomen.
A second surgery was performed to remove it, but her condition continued to deteriorate.
Nnanna further alleged that the hospital failed to refer her sister to better-equipped facilities like Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on time, despite repeated pleas.
She also recounted a critical moment when the hospital allegedly ran out of fuel while her sister was on oxygen support.
Eventually, Blessing was transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where she was admitted for emergency care.
Despite efforts by doctors, she passed away days later after suffering cardiac arrest.
The family, who reportedly spent over ₦2 million on treatment, is now demanding justice and calling for a full investigation into the hospital’s practices.
Reacting to the allegations, the hospital’s Medical Director, Abiodun Ojifinni, confirmed that the patient underwent surgery and later developed complications, including sepsis.
However, he denied drawing conclusions, stating that the actual cause of death would be determined through an ongoing autopsy and coroner’s inquest.
Authorities have reportedly been notified, while the family awaits the outcome of the investigation, hoping it will bring accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
