A wedding celebration turned tragic in Lagos after gunmen stormed an after-party and killed the bride’s father alongside a hypeman during a violent attack in the Ikotun area of the state.
The incident occurred on Saturday along Governor’s Road, specifically on Oviawe Street, shortly after guests had moved from the wedding ceremony to an after-party.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants invaded the venue while the celebration was ongoing and opened fire, causing panic as guests fled for safety.
A resident, who identified himself simply as Tosin, said the hypeman, identified as Victor, was entertaining guests when the attackers struck.
“They came into the party and started shooting. Everyone ran in different directions. They went straight for the hypeman, dragged him outside, and began beating him,” he said.

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the bride’s father intervened during the attack in an attempt to save Victor but was shot in the process.
“The father tried to plead with them while they were beating Victor, but they shot both of them. They died on the spot,” the source said.
The attack threw the community into confusion, with residents and business owners rushing indoors over fears of further violence.
Sources within the area suggested that the incident might be linked to ongoing cult-related clashes, noting that the attackers may have been targeting a rival but ended up harming innocent victims.
“This area has had repeated cult issues. It’s possible they were after someone, but the situation escalated and innocent people were killed,” a local source explained.
Residents described Victor as a familiar figure in the neighbourhood, known for his role as a hypeman at social events.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the bride’s father had yet to be confirmed, while the attackers also remained at large.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that investigations were ongoing. The police added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti for further handling.
The incident highlights growing concerns over cult-related violence in parts of Lagos, despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the menace.
