
A tragic road accident in Lagos has claimed the life of a dispatch rider after a speeding tanker collided with him in the Alapere area.
The incident, which occurred in the Motorways Inward Estate axis, involved an empty tanker belonging to NIPCO.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations revealed that the tanker driver was allegedly driving at high speed when he rammed into the moving dispatch rider, killing him instantly.
Spokesperson for LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that officials of the agency responded swiftly to the scene, preventing further escalation as fellow dispatch riders reportedly attempted to attack the tanker driver.
LASTMA personnel were able to rescue the injured driver from the angry crowd and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical attention at a nearby hospital.

“The prompt response of our officers helped to avert a breakdown of law and order. They acted with professionalism and restraint in managing the situation,” Taofiq stated.
Police officers from the Alausa Division were also deployed to restore calm and disperse the gathering at the scene.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the need for all road users to exercise caution.
He warned drivers, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, against reckless driving and overspeeding, describing them as leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian roads.
Authorities confirmed that the tanker and the wreckage of the motorcycle have been taken into police custody, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
