A 12-year-old girl identified as Ella has reportedly been swept away by floodwater in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, while returning from an errand.
Ella, who was reportedly from Ohafia, Abia State, had allegedly been sent out by her madam to purchase an item during heavy rainfall.
According to reports, the girl went out with an umbrella and had completed the errand before beginning her journey home.
However, while returning, she reportedly slipped and fell into a drainage channel at Agbama, Umuahia, where she was swept away by the rushing floodwater.
Residents reportedly began a search for the girl at about 7 p.m., with concerned youths mobilising to assist in the search.
The search was said to have extended to an area known as Umuafai as residents continued efforts to locate Ella.

It was further reported that some residents traced Ella’s madam and confronted her over the circumstances surrounding the incident. The encounter was reportedly captured on video.
As of the time of the report, Ella had not been located, and there was no confirmed information on whether she had been rescued or recovered.
The incident has raised concerns about the dangers posed by flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in areas where open drainage channels and fast-moving floodwater pose risks to residents.
