The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed allegations that its officers demanded ₦600,000 for the release of a woman arrested during an investigation into cult-related killings in Awka.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the allegation was misleading and clarified that the woman, identified as Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer, was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation involving her brother, Nwosu Kenechukwu, who is currently a person of interest in the case.
According to the police, investigations indicated that Jennifer was aware of efforts to arrest her brother and allegedly helped him evade the authorities. The command therefore maintained that her arrest was connected to the investigation and was not based solely on her relationship with the wanted suspect.
The police also categorically denied demanding ₦600,000 or any other payment as a condition for her release.

Ikenga explained that Jennifer was later granted bail in line with established police procedures after agreeing to cooperate with investigators and assist in efforts to locate her brother.
The command said its investigation remains focused on uncovering the circumstances surrounding the cult-related killings in Awka and bringing anyone found culpable to justice.
The police further urged media organisations, civil society groups and members of the public to verify sensitive allegations with relevant authorities before publication, particularly where such claims could affect ongoing investigations or public confidence in law enforcement.
The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to due process, professional policing and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.
