MIAMI, United States — Maximiliano Araujo scored a late equalizer as Uruguay salvaged a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Saudi Arabia stunned the South American side by taking the lead in the first half after capitalizing on a defensive error. The Green Falcons defended resolutely and looked on course for a famous victory as Uruguay struggled to create clear chances despite dominating possession.
Uruguay improved after the break and increased the pressure on Saudi Arabia’s defense. Their persistence paid off in the 80th minute when Araujo found the net to level the score and rescue a point for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Despite conceding late, Saudi Arabia will be encouraged by a disciplined performance that earned them a valuable point against one of the group’s favorites.
The result leaves Group H finely poised, with both teams remaining firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages.
