A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ejiofor Benton, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police over alleged harassment and attempts to arrest him following the detention of his father in Imo State.
Benton alleged that his father, Macqueen Ejiofor, was arrested by armed police officers at his residence in Umukor, Nkwerre Local Government Area, on September 1, 2026, and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Owerri, until September 5.
According to the petition, the arrest was allegedly linked to a complaint made by Benton’s sister, Patricia Benton, who is reportedly based in the United Kingdom. Benton said his father was later released on restrictive bail conditions and subsequently required medical treatment.
The corps member further alleged that police officers began looking for him over an accusation that he threatened his sister. He denied the allegation, stating that he had not spoken to her for almost a year and did not have her phone number.
Benton claimed that fear of arrest forced him to abandon his Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) in Abia State and go into hiding, putting his national service at risk.

He also alleged that he was suffering from malaria and had been unable to seek medical treatment safely. His farming activities, including his cucumber crops, were also reportedly affected by his absence.
The NYSC member maintained that the dispute stemmed from a family property matter and urged the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his father’s arrest and the allegations against him.
He appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to formally invite him if his presence is required for questioning, rather than allegedly pursuing him.
The petition was also copied to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Director-General of the NYSC.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the legality of the arrests and detention would depend on the specific circumstances, evidence available to the police and procedures followed by the officers involved.
