The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, a student of the University of Jos, who reportedly died after being attacked over allegations of stealing an iPhone.
In a statement issued on Monday, NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, stressing that no accusation should ever justify jungle justice or extrajudicial punishment.
According to the student body, Mbaye was allegedly assaulted by a group of individuals, humiliated, and locked inside a room during the attack. NANS further claimed that the iPhone at the center of the allegation was never recovered from the deceased.
Babatunde expressed concern over the growing trend of mob violence, urging Nigerians to allow law enforcement agencies to handle criminal allegations instead of taking the law into their own hands.
He welcomed reports that the Plateau State Police Command had arrested three suspects in connection with the incident, describing the development as a step toward ensuring justice.
The NANS president extended his condolences to Mbaye’s family, friends, and the University of Jos community, praying for the strength to bear the loss.

He also called on security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial, and speedy investigation, emphasizing that everyone found responsible should face the full weight of the law.
According to him, ensuring justice in the case would not only provide closure for the victim’s family but also serve as a deterrent against future acts of mob violence.
The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects as investigations into the student’s death continue.
