The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has cleared approximately 50 percent of the debris from the site of a collapsed three-storey hostel under construction in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The agency said search and rescue operations were suspended at the end of Monday’s exercise after emergency teams made significant progress in removing rubble. Rescue activities are expected to resume on Tuesday as officials continue searching for anyone who may still be trapped beneath the remaining debris.
According to NEMA, all rescue equipment was safely shut down after a day of intensive operations carried out by multiple emergency response agencies.
NEMA’s Head of Operations, Priscilla Madukwe, commended the dedication and professionalism of all responding personnel, urging stakeholders to remain available as rescue efforts continue.

The building, believed to be a student hostel under construction, collapsed earlier, prompting a coordinated response from NEMA, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other emergency responders.
Meanwhile, the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, clarified that the collapsed building does not belong to the institution. The school also stated that checks conducted on students residing in nearby hostels confirmed that none of its students was among those affected by the incident.
Rescue officials have pledged to continue operations until the search and rescue mission is successfully concluded.
