A potentially devastating fire incident was averted in Ilorin, Kwara State, after firefighters responded swiftly to a petrol tanker accident at a filling station in the early hours of Monday.
The incident occurred around 6:02 a.m. at YTK Filling Station, located opposite the Youth Camp in the Apata area of Eyenkorin. A 45,000-litre tanker transporting Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) reportedly lost control while the driver was attempting to reposition the vehicle within the station.
The tanker crashed into the station’s perimeter fence, causing the fuel compartment to detach from the truck and raising fears of a possible explosion due to the highly flammable nature of its content.
Emergency responders from the Kwara State Fire Service quickly secured the area and began intensive cooling operations to eliminate any potential source of ignition. Their prompt response prevented the spilled petrol from catching fire.
To further reduce the danger, the fuel was safely transferred into another empty tanker under the close supervision of fire officials. Authorities confirmed that no lives were lost, no injuries were recorded, and no fire damage occurred during the operation.
