A man identified simply as Opeyemi has reportedly drowned in a river in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State, after allegedly being chased and attacked by suspected cultists.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, while Opeyemi was on his way to purchase an item.
According to a police source, the suspected attackers allegedly pursued him, caught up with him and attacked him before he jumped into the river in an attempt to escape.
A resident said some people attempted to rescue Opeyemi, but the alleged attackers reportedly prevented them from doing so.

However, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, gave a different account, saying residents had conflicting versions of what happened.
While some reportedly claimed Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance and jumped into the river on his own, others who said they witnessed the incident alleged that he was chased and attacked before he jumped into the river.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as the conflicting accounts have not been independently verified.
The Lagos State Police Command was contacted for clarification, but a response was still awaited as of the time of filing the report.
