Veteran Nollywood actress, Lola Idije, has urged society to stop putting pressure on women to get married at a young age, stressing that marriage should not be treated as a competition or a deadline.
The actress made this known during an appearance on the Africanlist Podcast, where she spoke about societal expectations surrounding marriage and the challenges faced by women raising children without husbands.
According to her, some women may not get married until they are 40 or 50, and such decisions or circumstances should not make them objects of criticism.
Idije noted that not every woman has a husband to support her in raising children, explaining that some women become single mothers because of circumstances beyond their control rather than personal choice.
She said, “Not everybody will have a husband to help them raise their children. So women have to carry their burden alone. Not all of them choose that life.”

The actress also questioned the growing pressure on young women to settle down early, warning that rushing into marriage could lead some into choosing the wrong partners.
She wondered why society expects women to marry at 20 when there is no guarantee that such early decisions will result in successful marriages.
Idije further shared her thoughts on motherhood, observing that women tend to become softer after having children.
Her comments have once again brought attention to conversations about marriage, single motherhood, societal expectations and the importance of allowing women to make personal life decisions without unnecessary judgment.
