Security operatives in Kogi State have successfully rescued 17 pupils abducted from an Islamic school in Lokoja, while efforts continue to secure the release of nine others still in captivity.
The incident occurred late Saturday night when suspected gunmen stormed Daarul Kitab School, an Islamic institution with an orphanage located in Zariagi along the NNPC Road axis near Kabba Junction.
The attackers reportedly abducted 26 individuals, including 24 pupils and two wives of the school’s proprietor.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Saliu Afusat, disclosed that a swift response by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division, Lokoja, led to the rescue of 17 victims through a coordinated operation involving multiple security agencies.
She noted that joint teams comprising the police, military, and other security operatives are currently intensifying search and rescue missions to ensure the safe return of the remaining victims.
The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, has visited the scene of the attack and ordered the deployment of tactical teams for bush combing, intelligence gathering, and enhanced surveillance in the area.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has condemned the attack, describing it as both unfortunate and preventable.
The Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, stated that although security agencies responded promptly, concerns have been raised over the school’s alleged operation in a remote location without proper registration.
He warned that unregistered schools and orphanages situated in isolated areas pose significant security risks, especially amid the country’s ongoing security challenges.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could aid in rescuing the remaining victims and apprehending those responsible.
The incident underscores the persistent threat of kidnapping across parts of Nigeria, with schools and rural communities increasingly becoming targets due to their vulnerability.
