The Edo Special Security Squad has arrested 12 individuals suspected of cult-related activities and sealed two apartments allegedly used as initiation centres following a violent incident that led to the death of a student near the University of Benin gate.
The operations, carried out across several identified hotspots in Benin City, were led by senior security officials attached to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s office.
Areas targeted during the coordinated raids included Ekosodin, Isihor, Old Road near S&T Barracks, Airport Road, 19th Street in Ugbowo, Ogba-Evbuodia, and Evbuomore Quarters.
According to the squad’s spokesperson, Noah Idemudia, the crackdown was triggered by intelligence gathered after the killing of a young man on Sunday close to the University of Benin gate.

He stated that while the 12 suspects were not directly linked to the killing itself, they were identified as members of various cult groups after security operatives reportedly discovered incriminating materials and symbols during the raids.
The suspects have since been transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State for further profiling and investigation.
Idemudia also revealed that two apartments were sealed during the operation. One of the locations, at Ogba-Evbuodia, was allegedly being used for cult initiation activities and reportedly resisted arrest attempts.
Another apartment in Evbuomore Quarters was said to contain shrines and other items believed to be used for ritualistic initiation processes. The occupants and property owners have been invited for questioning.
The security team further alleged that some community leaders known as Okaigheles may be harbouring criminal elements and facilitating access to weapons used in violent attacks.
Authorities warned that any involvement in illegal possession or support of criminal activity would attract legal consequences.
The government also issued a stern warning against planned cult anniversary celebrations, stating that security agencies have been placed on high alert to prevent unlawful gatherings.
Officials reiterated that the crackdown forms part of broader efforts to curb cultism and violent crime across Edo State, urging community leaders to cooperate in maintaining peace and security.
