
The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has apprehended two individuals in Benin City for possession of large quantities of illicit drugs, reinforcing the state government’s ongoing crackdown on drug-related crimes.
The Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Festus Ebea, confirmed the arrests in a statement, identifying the suspects as Efosa Uyi and Stella Thompson.
According to him, the suspects were picked up at different locations within the city on Friday, May 29, 2026.
Items recovered from the suspects include Indian hemp, crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as “Ice”), as well as synthetic cannabis variants such as Colorado, Canadian Loud, and Scottish Loud.
Ebea stated that the suspects would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

He emphasized that the arrests demonstrate the Edo State Government’s firm resolve to eliminate illicit drug activities and safeguard the well-being of residents.
“We are working tirelessly to support the NDLEA in ridding the state of drug-related crimes. Edo will not be a safe haven for drug dealers and users,” Ebea warned.
The commissioner also urged young people to steer clear of drug abuse, noting its destructive impact on individuals and its link to criminal behavior.
He further called on members of the media to closely monitor the case to ensure justice is served and to discourage others from engaging in similar offenses.
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at cleansing the state of illegal drug trade and protecting its youth from substance abuse.
