The Edo State Special Security Squad has intensified its fight against crime with the demolition of a building allegedly used as a hideout for kidnapping and drug-related activities in Ubiaja, Esan South-East Local Government Area.
The operation followed the arrest of nine suspected kidnappers during a recent raid in Irrua, with authorities linking the demolished structure to a suspected kingpin, Jerry Okoyomo.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Patrick Ebojele, the decisive action drew commendation from residents who described it as a bold step toward restoring security in the area.
Chairman of the Special Security Squad, Noah Paddy Idemudia, revealed that the building was uncovered during investigations into a kidnapping incident that led to multiple arrests.
Preliminary findings indicated that the property served as a base for coordinating kidnapping operations and illegal drug activities.
Idemudia reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks, warning that all structures linked to crime would be identified and destroyed.
He also urged landlords to properly screen tenants, noting that criminals often operate under false identities.
Residents of the community expressed relief following the demolition, describing the building as a long-standing source of fear.

One resident said the action had brought renewed confidence and safety to the area, while others praised the government for taking swift and decisive measures.
Earlier, suspects connected to the case were paraded at the Ubiaja Police Station.
One of the suspects, Musa Mohammadu, claimed he was lured from northern Nigeria with the promise of a cattle-rearing job, only to discover there was no such opportunity upon arrival.
He stated that he became uneasy after noticing suspicious activities before eventually being arrested.
Meanwhile, the alleged kingpin denied involvement in kidnapping but admitted to dealing in illicit drugs.
A victim rescued from the gang also recounted her ordeal, explaining that she was held in a bush hideout and closely monitored by members of the group.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Edo State Government to curb criminal activities and strengthen public confidence in the safety of lives and property.
