
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits killed at least five youths and injured several others during an attack on a local mining site in Gero village, Gyel District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.
A resident, Festus Dalyop, told Daily Post that the victims were working at the site when the assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire. Five people died instantly, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The attack came hours after gunmen stormed the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, about five kilometres away, killing three security operatives.
National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth-Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed both incidents and condemned the violence.

He said the attacks show worsening insecurity around Jos South and raise concerns about the safety of residents and national institutions in the area.
Tengwong called on security agencies to step up surveillance and protect lives and property to restore confidence among affected communities.
Plateau State Police spokesman SP Alfred Alabo confirmed the mining site attack and said investigations are underway. A manhunt for the perpetrators has also begun.
