Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the killing of a young man near the main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice.
The incident, which occurred in broad daylight on Sunday, has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over security and cult-related violence in the state.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the governor described the killing as a “senseless and unacceptable act,” emphasizing that it is a direct threat to public safety and human dignity.
Okpebholo extended his condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, noting that the government will not allow the case to be swept under the carpet.
He assured residents that security agencies are already working tirelessly to track down the perpetrators.
“The killers may run, but they cannot hide forever. Justice will be served,” the statement read.
The Edo State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the attack, while collaboration among security agencies including the police, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army has been intensified to dismantle criminal networks operating in the state.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to eradicating cultism through a combination of enforcement and preventive strategies.
These include targeted security operations in high-risk communities, stakeholder engagement with traditional and religious leaders, and rehabilitation programs for vulnerable youths.
He noted that while progress has been made, the recent killing highlights the need for sustained and intensified efforts.
Authorities have urged members of the public with useful information to come forward, assuring that all tips will be treated with strict confidentiality.
The victim, identified as Alexander Omogiate, was reportedly shot at close range by masked gunmen while driving out of the university gate shortly after completing his examinations.
Other occupants in the vehicle sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the area and begun a full-scale investigation into the incident.
The Edo State Government reaffirmed its resolve to ensure the safety of all residents, stressing that the state will not serve as a safe haven for criminal elements.
