A 14-year-old boy has lost his life after drowning while attempting to retrieve his shoe from a canal located behind Millennium Park in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

“The body of the 14-year-old boy was recovered from the canal and immediately taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the deceased boy’s father declined an autopsy and requested that the body be released to the family for burial, a request that was granted.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy comes just days after an 18-year-old identified as Abdullahi Aminu reportedly drowned after falling into a pond in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State.
The recent incidents have raised concerns about water safety, especially during the rainy season, as authorities continue to urge residents to exercise caution around canals, ponds, and other water bodies.
