Abia Community Women Protest Alleged Indiscriminate Arrest of Youths
Women from Amanato Eziama Nneato community in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest against what they described as indiscriminate arrests of their youths and community leader by security operatives.
The protesters, who barricaded the Abia State Government House, carried placards and expressed deep concern over what they termed persistent harassment of male residents in the community.
According to the women, the situation has created widespread fear, forcing many young men to flee or avoid staying in the area to escape arrest.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Madam Janeth Nwankwo linked the arrests to a long-standing land dispute between their community and neighbouring Umuacha Umuobi Autonomous Community.
She noted that the matter, which has lasted for decades, is currently before the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri, stressing that the ongoing arrests were unjustified given the legal process already underway.

In response, the Abia State Government assured the protesters that the concerns raised would be thoroughly investigated.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, who addressed the women on behalf of the government, commended them for adopting a peaceful approach in presenting their grievances.
He assured that the government would not only look into the allegations but also hear from the neighbouring Umuacha Umuobi community to ensure a fair and balanced resolution.
“We have listened to your complaints and we will convey your message to the governor.
This government is committed to the welfare of its people, and the matter will be carefully examined,” Ajagba stated.
He further urged both communities to maintain peace while efforts are made to resolve the dispute amicably.
