A two-storey residential building has collapsed in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, raising fresh concerns over compliance with building regulations and construction standards.
The incident occurred at Inyaba-Umudim in Nnewi on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, confirmed the development during an assessment visit to the scene on Monday.
Ojukwu described the collapse as unfortunate and said no fatality had been officially recorded at the time of his visit. He added, however, that authorities were still making efforts to determine whether anyone was affected by the incident.
According to the commissioner, preliminary findings showed that the collapsed structure was poorly constructed and erected without the necessary approval from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
He further disclosed that the building had been constructed on the fence wall of an existing three-storey building within the same compound.
As a precautionary measure, occupants of the adjoining building are expected to be evacuated while experts conduct a structural integrity test on the property.

Ojukwu said the three-storey structure could be demolished if it fails to meet the required safety standards.
He added that the state government would intensify enforcement against illegal structures and buildings constructed in violation of approved planning and setback regulations.
The commissioner warned that similar buildings erected within prohibited areas or without the required approvals could face demolition as part of efforts to prevent further building disasters in the state.
