A 56-year-old man, Kelechi Madu, has allegedly been murdered in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, after a friend reportedly recruited suspected killers to conceal a fraudulent land transaction.
The Anambra State Police Command said it has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged murder.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Madu left his home on the evening of August 17, 2026, but did not return.
His wife reported him missing to the police the following day, August 18, prompting a search involving police operatives, local vigilantes and members of the deceased’s family.
Later that day, the search ended tragically when Madu was found dead in a bush at Umuobi, Awkuzu. Police said he had suffered a deep axe wound to the head.
His remains were recovered and deposited at a hospital for preservation.
Police investigations subsequently led to the arrest of Madu’s 32-year-old friend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo, who allegedly confessed to his involvement in planning the killing.

The police said preliminary investigations revealed that Nwankwo had allegedly obtained money from Madu under the guise of helping him acquire a piece of land.
According to the command, Nwankwo allegedly recruited two other individuals to kill Madu in an attempt to cover up the alleged fraudulent transaction and prevent the deceased from recovering his money.
Two additional suspects were also arrested in connection with the case, while investigations continue to determine the involvement of other persons.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the investigation be intensified to identify and arrest everyone allegedly connected to the conspiracy and murder.
The police assured that all suspects found culpable would be brought before the law to face justice.
