
The Lagos State Police Command has successfully rescued a 23-year-old man, identified as Joshua Babalola, after he jumped into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026, following a distress alert received by the Marine Police Unit. Acting promptly, officers mobilised to the scene, where they rescued the young man alive with the assistance of local fishermen operating in the area.
Following the rescue, Babalola, who identified himself as a painter based in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State, revealed that he had travelled to Lagos earlier that day without informing anyone.
According to police sources, he had been struggling with financial challenges and emotional distress prior to the incident.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the victim has been stabilised and is currently receiving care, while efforts are ongoing to reach his family members.
“He was rescued with the help of fishermen in the area. This marks the second similar rescue recorded within three months,” Adebisi stated.
The police further stressed the importance of public cooperation in emergency response efforts, urging residents, especially those in riverine communities, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across Lagos State, emphasizing that timely information from the public plays a critical role in preventing tragedies.
