A police inspector identified as Henry Effiong has been killed while on guard duty at the residence of Imo State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief Bar Rex Anunobi, in New Owerri.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the commissioner’s residence in the Sokom Villa Area of New Owerri.
Effiong was reportedly discovered dead in his room after the commissioner’s housekeeper, Solomon Uzobu, raised the alarm around 7:00 a.m. The commissioner subsequently contacted the police at about 8:00 a.m.
Following the report, officers from the New Owerri Police Division were deployed to the residence to commence preliminary investigations.
The inspector was reportedly found with his legs tied and his body lying close to the bathing area. Investigators suspect that a sharp object, believed to be a machete, was used in the attack.
The police also raised concerns over the whereabouts of a security guard identified as Genesis, who was attached to the residence. According to the report, investigators suspect that the guard may have helped the attackers gain access to the premises.

Genesis allegedly left the residence after the incident, packed his belongings and switched off his phone before disappearing. Police are currently investigating his possible connection to the killing.
An empty magazine and a walkie-talkie were recovered from the scene, while the inspector’s service rifle and mobile phone were reportedly taken by the assailants.
The deceased officer’s body was later evacuated to the Federal Teaching Hospital for preservation.
The Imo State Police Command said investigations were ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible, locate the fleeing security guard and recover the stolen firearm.
