The Lagos State Police Command has clarified the cause of the recent explosion scare in the Mushin area of Lagos, firmly ruling out terrorism, sabotage, or the use of explosive devices.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed that comprehensive investigations revealed the incident was triggered by the failure of a pressurised mechanical component not an improvised explosive device (IED) or any form of criminal activity.
According to the police, forensic and technical analyses found no evidence of explosive materials, detonators, or blast patterns typically associated with terror attacks. Instead, findings pointed to a “mechanical explosion” caused by a sudden release of energy from a faulty pressurised component located outside a vehicle.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 22, at 22 Wey Street in the busy Shoe Materials Market in Oke Mushin, initially sparked panic among residents and traders.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud blast involving a parked Toyota Sienna, leading to widespread speculation about a possible bomb attack.

Police investigations, however, determined that the mechanical failure shattered the vehicle’s front passenger-side glass panels and caused minor injuries to an occupant.
“The failure generated a sudden release of energy which resulted in the damage observed. There is no link to terrorism or any criminal use of explosives,” the statement emphasized.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, visited the scene and reassured the public that the area was safe and free from any security threat.
The police command has urged residents to remain calm, emphasizing that the situation was an isolated mechanical failure and not a coordinated attack.
This clarification comes as part of efforts to dispel fear and restore public confidence after the initial reports triggered widespread alarm across the state.
