The Katsina State Police Command has arrested four suspects over alleged railway vandalism and unlawful possession of suspected stolen property after recovering 70 railway sleepers concealed in a vehicle.
The suspects were arrested at about 12:30 a.m. on October 11, 2026, when police operatives conducting routine stop-and-search operations intercepted a white J5 vehicle along the Kurfi–Tsanni Village Road.
The vehicle, with registration number BAU 821 ZY, was reportedly driven by 25-year-old Anas Abdullahi, with three other occupants identified as Nasir Nuhu, Salisu Yusuf and Nuru Bala.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, the railway sleepers were hidden behind 17 bags of animal feed in an attempt to conceal the materials.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that one of the suspects, Nasir Nuhu, confessed to receiving the railway sleepers from a man identified as Anas Moh’d, who is said to be from Bauchi State and remains at large.
The materials were allegedly intended for delivery to another individual, identified as Umar Bashir, in Katsina.

Police confirmed that the four suspects remain in custody, while the vehicle, the 70 railway sleepers and the 17 bags of animal feed have been recovered as exhibits.
The command added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and establish the exact source of the vandalised railway materials.
The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, CP Ali Umar Fage, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and tackling vandalism.
He also urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist security operatives in identifying and apprehending suspected offenders.
The arrest comes days after the Ogun State Police Command reportedly arrested a 36-year-old man, Shobande Taofeek, over alleged vandalism and theft of railway infrastructure in the Arigbajo area of the state. Police said 16 railway iron rods and two gas cylinders suspected to have been stolen were recovered during that operation.
Authorities continue to warn against the destruction and theft of railway infrastructure, which is vital to public transportation and national development.
