No fewer than nine people were burnt to death, while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road crash along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway late Monday night.
The tragic accident occurred near Zangoro village in Bauchi State when a Toyota commercial bus collided with a MAN diesel tipper truck travelling in the opposite direction. The impact of the collision reportedly triggered a fire that engulfed the vehicles, leaving nine occupants burnt to death.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash happened at about 11:20 p.m., with emergency responders arriving at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call.
The commercial bus was transporting passengers, while the tipper truck was conveying sand. A total of 17 male adults were involved in the accident.

The FRSC confirmed that nine victims died at the scene, while the remaining eight suffered injuries of varying severity. The injured were evacuated to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.
Preliminary findings by the road safety agency indicate that a tyre burst while the vehicles were in motion caused the collision.
The vehicles involved in the crash, along with recovered property from the scene, have been handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Bauchi State Police Command for further investigation.
The rescue operation was coordinated by the FRSC Sector Rescue and Maintenance Area Officer in Toro as authorities continue efforts to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
