A tragic building collapse in Anambra State has claimed the lives of two persons, while three others were rescued with injuries after a three-storey students’ hostel gave way in Amaokpala, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly housed about 60 rooms and collapsed on Sunday night while occupants—mostly students—were inside.
The incident triggered panic among residents and passers-by, as several individuals were feared trapped beneath the rubble.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud noise moments before the structure came crashing down. Within seconds, cries for help filled the air as people rushed to the scene in an attempt to assist victims.

Emergency response teams, including the Nigerian Red Cross Society, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the State Fire Service, and the Nigeria Police Force, swiftly mobilized to the site.
Rescue operations began in the early hours of Monday, with personnel deploying heavy-duty equipment to carefully remove debris and search for survivors.
Authorities confirmed that three injured victims were successfully rescued and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. However, two bodies—one female and one male—have so far been recovered from the wreckage.
Officials say rescue efforts are ongoing, as responders continue to comb through the debris to ensure no one remains trapped. The site has been sealed off to prevent interference and to allow investigators determine the cause of the collapse.
Security agencies have urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and stay clear of the area to enable emergency teams carry out their operations safely.
The incident has once again raised concerns about building safety standards and regulatory enforcement, particularly in student-populated areas.
