The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Kano Strategic Command has uncovered a network of caves and underground tunnels allegedly used for illicit drug operations in the Rimin Kebe area of Kano State.
The discovery was made during “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” carried out on May 4, 2026, following weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance in the area. According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, operatives found multiple caves that had been constructed and modified by suspected drug dealers to serve as both living quarters and distribution points.
Several of the hideouts were equipped with household items such as mats, pillows, food flasks, plates, and cutlery, suggesting prolonged occupation and organized activity. The statement also revealed that some tunnels appeared to be under construction and may have been intended to connect different underground hideouts for easier movement and storage of narcotics.

Commander of the Kano Strategic Command, Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, said some of the caves and tunnels have already been dismantled, while plans are underway to demolish and secure the remaining structures. He warned that the agency would continue to pursue those involved in the illegal drug trade regardless of where they hide.
“Our commitment is unwavering. Those involved in illicit drug trade should consider exiting now, as we are determined to rid Kano of this menace,” Lawal said.
The operation, he added, aligns with the directive of NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, to intensify the crackdown on drug networks nationwide. The Command has also appealed to residents to support its efforts by reporting suspicious activities, stressing that timely information is crucial in curbing substance abuse in the state.
