Police condemn “barbaric” act as suspects are arrested and manhunt intensifies
A tragic incident of mob justice has unfolded in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, where a woman accused of child theft was brutally killed by an angry crowd despite being in police custody.
According to the Kaduna State Police Command, the incident occurred on Saturday morning after a distress call alerted authorities that a woman was being attacked by a mob over allegations of child theft—claims later confirmed to be unsubstantiated.
Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, rescued the victim, and placed her in protective custody at a nearby station pending proper investigation.
However, the situation escalated when a large group of residents reportedly stormed the police facility, overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman, and carried out the fatal attack.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, described the act as “barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law,” emphasizing that no individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands.

He further disclosed that several suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved in the mob action.
The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, also condemned the attack, warning against jungle justice and attacks on law enforcement personnel.
He urged members of the public to report suspicious activities through appropriate channels rather than resorting to violence.
“This command will not tolerate mob action or any form of extrajudicial killings. Justice must be served through lawful means,” he stated.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the rising cases of mob justice across Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness, stronger law enforcement presence, and adherence to due process.
Authorities have assured the public that all perpetrators will be brought to justice as investigations continue.
