A resident of Minna, identified as Idris, has raised serious concerns over alleged negligence after losing both his newborn son and his mother on the same night at a public health facility.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Juma’i Babangida Aliyu Maternal and Neonatal Hospital, where Idris’ wife had delivered a baby boy through a Caesarean section.
According to him, both mother and child were initially in stable condition following the procedure.
However, Idris said the newborn later developed breathing complications later that evening.
He alleged that a disruption in electricity supply at the hospital affected monitoring equipment and delayed urgent medical response at a critical time.

Questioning the hospital’s emergency preparedness, he claimed that power supply challenges contributed to the situation, noting that delays in restoring electricity hindered timely intervention.
The tragedy deepened the same night when Idris’ mother, who had also been taken to the hospital for treatment, passed away. He alleged that only junior or trainee nurses were available at the time she was attended to.
According to his account, she briefly responded to treatment but died shortly afterward.
In an emotional appeal, Idris called on Umar Bago, the state Ministry of Health, and other relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and improve conditions at the facility.
The incident has sparked renewed concern over healthcare delivery and infrastructure in Niger State, particularly regarding staffing levels, emergency response systems, and power supply in critical care settings.
A similar case had previously been reported at the same hospital, where allegations of poor emergency support and unstable electricity supply were raised, though hospital authorities denied that such factors directly caused the patient’s death.
As calls for accountability grow, many are urging authorities to conduct a thorough review to ensure patient safety and prevent future occurrences.
