Traders in Lagos have taken to the streets to protest the growing activities of Chinese retailers, saying direct sales to consumers are putting increasing pressure on local businesses.
The traders particularly raised concerns over Chinese wholesalers allegedly selling directly to final consumers instead of supplying local distributors and retailers.
According to the protesters, the practice allows foreign businesses to sell at prices close to wholesale rates, making it difficult for indigenous retailers to compete.

They said the development is also affecting local middlemen and other businesses that depend on the traditional supply chain for their livelihoods.
The traders are calling on relevant government authorities and business stakeholders to intervene and create a fairer arrangement that allows foreign businesses to operate while protecting local traders.
They also urged government representatives, Chinese manufacturers, business leaders and local traders to engage in discussions aimed at addressing the growing concerns surrounding competition in Lagos markets.
