The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the alleged harassment, intimidation, and threats against a 28-year-old widow, identified as Tosin, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The development was disclosed by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) on Wednesday, following widespread public outrage triggered by viral social media posts highlighting the widow’s ordeal.
According to the agency, it received reports on July 28 detailing allegations that members of the deceased husband’s family—including the father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and his wife—had subjected the widow to threats, physical assault, and attempts to dispossess her and her children of their home and inheritance.
The DSVA stated that it promptly contacted the victim, who confirmed that she had already filed a report with the Owutu Police Division. The agency also began immediate collaboration with the police to ensure swift intervention.
Preliminary feedback from law enforcement authorities confirmed that one of the alleged perpetrators has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Lagos State Government assured the public that it would ensure the safety and protection of the widow and her two children, while working closely with relevant stakeholders to secure justice.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting survivors and ensuring that justice is served in accordance with the law,” the agency said, while also commending members of the public and partner organizations for drawing attention to the case.
The incident gained traction after human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared videos online showing the widow allegedly being locked out of her matrimonial home by her father-in-law, despite his ownership of a separate residence.
Further details revealed that the woman’s husband had died only eight days prior, after which his family allegedly moved into the home, confined her and her children to a single room, and began distributing his assets, including plans to sell his car.
The situation has sparked renewed concerns over the treatment of widows in Nigeria, with advocacy groups calling for stricter enforcement of laws protecting widows from intimidation, unlawful eviction, and denial of inheritance rights.
Authorities have reiterated that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
