Widow Locked Out by In-Laws Eight Days After Husband’s Death in Lagos -

A disturbing case of alleged intimidation and property dispossession has emerged in Lagos, where a 28-year-old widow, identified as Tosin, was reportedly locked out of her matrimonial home by her father-in-law just eight days after the death of her husband.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, drew public outrage after a video surfaced showing the father-in-law padlocking the gate of the residence, leaving the grieving widow and her two young children stranded outside.

According to reports, Tosin’s husband passed away on July 20, 2026. Shortly after his death, members of his family allegedly moved into the residence located in Ikorodu and began asserting control over his properties.

The widow was reportedly forced to move her belongings and those of her children into a single room, while some of her late husband’s possessions were allegedly shared among family members.

Activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who brought the case to public attention, condemned the actions, stating that the in-laws were prioritizing property over the welfare of the deceased’s immediate family. He further revealed that the widow has been subjected to threats and intimidation for speaking out.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed that it has intervened in the matter. In a statement, the agency disclosed that it had established contact with the widow, who reported experiencing threats to her life, physical assault, and ongoing harassment.

Authorities also confirmed that the case had been reported to the Owutu Police Division, and the alleged perpetrator has since been arrested. Investigations are currently ongoing.

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly widows and children, from abuse and unlawful dispossession. Officials emphasized that no one should be subjected to such treatment, especially during a period of grief.

This incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of widow abuse and property grabbing in some parts of society, sparking renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting widows’ rights and inheritance.
