Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kwara State have arrested a 34-year-old man, Akinola Tosin, for allegedly impersonating a soldier and defrauding a Point-of-Sale operator. The suspect was apprehended in Ilorin following a complaint that he used a fake bank transfer alert to obtain money from the victim.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Ayoola Michael Shola, preliminary investigations showed that the suspect collected N40,600 after presenting a fake debit alert to the POS operator. The deception made the victim believe a transfer had been successful, prompting the release of cash.

Further investigations revealed that Akinola had been posing as a member of the Nigerian Army. He was found with a fake military identity card bearing his name and other military-related items, which he allegedly used to gain public trust and carry out his fraudulent activities. The suspect also confessed to previous fraud cases involving multiple victims.
The command said another suspect, Feranmi Idoko Godwin, identified as an accomplice, is currently at large. Efforts are ongoing to arrest him and conclude investigations. Items recovered from Akinola include two Opay ATM cards, two UBA ATM cards, two First Bank ATM cards, one PalmPay ATM card, and one National Identity Card.
Kwara NSCDC Commandant, Abbas Ndah Mohammed, said the suspect will be prosecuted after investigations are completed. He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to fighting crime and urged members of the public to remain vigilant. He advised people to always verify electronic transactions before releasing cash, goods, or valuables.
