
A Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer identified as Joseph Ali has reportedly died after a locally fabricated rifle he was handling accidentally discharged and struck him in the left eye in Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 7:30 a.m. in Compensation Layout, Old Kutunku, while Ali was preparing to leave his residence for work.
According to a police signal cited in reports, Ali had dressed for duty and picked up the locally fabricated rifle, which he reportedly used to help secure the community. He was allegedly unaware that the firearm was cocked.
The rifle reportedly discharged while he was attempting to pick it up, with the pellets hitting him in the left eye.
The incident occurred in the presence of his wife and children, who were reportedly around at the time.

Ali was immediately rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) for medical attention. However, the doctor on duty reportedly examined him and confirmed that he had died.
His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
The case has reportedly been referred to the Department of Criminal Investigation for further investigation.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge and determine how the firearm came to be in the officer’s possession.
