The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested 10 suspected traffic robbers and 20 motorists for allegedly driving against traffic, popularly known as “one-way.”
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed this on Wednesday while providing an update on the command’s recent operations in Abuja.
Sanusi said the crackdown on traffic robbers followed complaints from residents about criminals who allegedly target motorists and passengers during traffic congestion.
According to him, some of the suspects reportedly disguised themselves as hawkers while carrying out their activities around major roads and traffic points.
The commissioner said he had directed Divisional Police Officers, particularly those in the city centre, to remove suspicious persons from major traffic locations.
He identified the 10 suspected traffic robbery suspects as Umar Salihu, Yusuf Isah, Aliyu Hamza, Abubakar Naziru, Muhammed Musa, Yagugu Mohammed, Suwidi Jibril, Kasimu Taraba, Abubakar Sani and Aminu Umar.
He said the suspects were in police custody and undergoing investigation.
The commissioner also disclosed that 20 motorists arrested for various traffic offences, particularly driving against traffic, had been charged to court.
Meanwhile, Sanusi revealed that police operatives rescued three residents who were kidnapped from their home in Nyanya on August 14 and taken to New Nyanya in Nasarawa State.
He said operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Team 1, tracked the suspects following information provided by a resident and arrested two persons allegedly connected to the incident.
The suspects were identified as Godwin Afekhide and Aaron Ogbu.
The three victims were rescued unharmed and reunited with their families.
The police commissioner further disclosed the arrest of suspects allegedly linked to armed robbery, burglary and receiving stolen property.
He said 32-year-old Ismail Tasiu was arrested at a hotel in Jabi following investigations into robbery incidents in Nyanya and Kubwa.

Tasiu was reportedly arrested alongside 35-year-old Adamu Aliyu, who police alleged was involved in receiving stolen items.
Items recovered included five motorcycles, three knives, a number plate and a face cap bearing the inscription “Kaduna State Vigilante Service.”
Sanusi added that six other suspects were arrested in connection with burglary and armed robbery.
He said investigations indicated that the gang allegedly specialised in breaking into houses at night, stealing valuables and attacking victims.
The commissioner assured residents that the command would continue its operations against criminal elements and strengthen security across the FCT.
