A residential building in the Eyenkorin area of Asa Local Government Area, Kwara State, was gutted by fire in the early hours of Sunday, destroying a room-and-parlour apartment and a two-bedroom flat.
The incident occurred around 12:38 a.m. on Tewo-Gbore Street, Ogele Ori-Sunbare. According to the Kwara State Fire Service, firefighters arrived quickly after receiving a distress call and were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures.
Spokesperson Hassan Adekunle said preliminary investigations showed the fire started from charcoal that had not been properly quenched. He explained that sacks of charcoal had just been unloaded near the building, and residual heat from the smoldering charcoal reignited when exposed to air, causing the fire to spread.
