
A fire outbreak reportedly caused by children playing with a cooking gas cylinder has destroyed parts of a residential building in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The incident occurred around 12:57 p.m. on Monday at a storey building located along Ibrahim Taiwo Road.
The property, which consists of four three-bedroom flats, saw two of the apartments severely affected by the fire before emergency responders intervened.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, preliminary findings revealed that the blaze started when minors, left unattended by their parents, began playing with a gas cylinder. The situation quickly escalated beyond their control.
Witnesses reported that the children raised the alarm after the fire intensified, drawing the attention of a passerby who promptly alerted the fire service. Firefighters arrived swiftly and were able to contain the blaze by approximately 1:21 p.m., preventing further destruction.

Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded in the incident, attributing the outcome to the timely response of emergency personnel.
Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Mohammed, emphasized the need for increased vigilance among parents and guardians.
He cautioned against leaving children unsupervised around hazardous items such as gas cylinders, matches, and other flammable materials.
He also urged residents to report fire incidents promptly to emergency agencies to minimize damage and ensure public safety.
This incident adds to a growing number of fire outbreaks recorded across Kwara State in recent months, affecting homes, markets, and commercial properties.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of preventive measures and public awareness in reducing such occurrences.
